The Summoning by Kelley Armstrong, reviewed by FF

SummoningChloe Saunders is an ordinary 15 year old girl. Until her world is turned upside down. One day at school the impossible becomes possible, a man chases Chloe through the corridors, he backs her into a classroom, he claims he just wants to talk ,hysterical Chloe begins screaming and when hands grab at her she fights back in fear of her life. Chloe is sedated and brought to hospital because the man that chased Chloe, no one else saw him.

Chloe is then sent to a group home to try and get better but there everything gets worse. Chloe faces trials not just physically but mentally and emotionally as well. She begins to realize that things just aren’t adding up and that people not just the kids in the group home are hiding things. As Chloe explores her new talents and comes to terms with the truth about her life she will meet new friends, new enemies and a few surprise people along the way.

I found this book enjoyable and fun it has adventure, mystery, romance and a supernatural twist and recommend it for anyone who like these types of books there will be death, there will be genetically engineered children, there will be raising of the dead but there will also be a girl who despite all odds will fight for her life and her friends.

Book of the Week – Boy in the Tower by Polly Ho-Yan

The Boy in the TowerThis week’s Book of the Week is on the Branford Boase 2015 longlist, and is a quietly terrifying Science Fiction story about being isolated and surrounded by aliens.

When they first arrived, they came quietly and stealthily, as if they tip-toed into the world when we were all looking the other way.

Ade loves living at the top of a tower block. From his window, he feels like he can see the whole world stretching out beneath him.

But one day, other tower blocks start falling down around him. Strange, menacing plants begin to appear and no one knows where they came from.

Now their tower isn’t safe any more. Ade and his mum are trapped and there’s no way out…

The last Terry Pratchett Book…

Wee Free MenIt has been announced that Terry Pratchett had completed his final novel, and it will be published in Autumn this year. The Shepherd’s Crown is the fifth Tiffany Aching book, a subseries for young adult readers set in the Discworld. The other books in the series are The Wee Free Men, A Hat Full of Sky, Wintersmith and I Shall Wear Midnight.

The blurb on the inside cover of The Wee Free Men says…

There’s trouble on the Aching farm – a monster in the river, a headless horseman in the driveway and nightmares spreading down from the hills. And now Tiffany Aching’s little brother has been stolen by the Queen of the Fairies (although Tiffany doesn’t think this is entirely a bad thing).

Tiffany’s got to get him back. To help her, she has a weapon (a frying pan), her granny’s magic book (well, Diseases of the Sheep, actually) and –

‘Crivens! Whut aboot us, ye daftie!’

– oh,yes. She’s also got the Nac Mac Feegle, the Wee Free Men, the fightin’, thievin’, tiny blue-skinned pictsies who were thrown out of Fairyland for being Drunk and Disorderly…

The Wee Free Men and the other Tiffany Aching books can be found on the display just inside the library doors.

The Amazing Maurice and his Educated Rodents by Terry Pratchett, reviewed by rubyslippers

IAmazing Maurice found it really hard to decide which is my favourite Terry Pratchett book – I love all of them – but The Amazing Maurice and his Educated Rodents is absolutely my favourite one to read out loud. I think that the reason is the characters – each of the rats is a individual and complex person, with the most amazing names, and Maurice must be the most Machiavellian anti-hero to ever feature in a children’s novel. I also really enjoy the chapter heading quotes from Mr Bunnsy Has An Adventure and Terry Pratchett’s feature footnotes. This is a book to giggle over, and one that can be read and re-read over and over again.
