The last ever Flipside magazine

FlipsideSadly the current issue of Flipside will also be the last one – the IET have decided to close it down. I promise that the library will keep all the back copies until they fall to pieces!

In this issue:

  • An interview with Will Poulter, who stars in The Maze Runner, due out in September this year
  • The intelligence of chimpanzees (and whether they could really take over the world)
  •  Surfing
  • Forensic Science (what is fiction and what is fact)
  • Reconstructing dinosaurs

and much, much, much more…

The current edition of Flipside is kept on the main library desk – back issues are on the windowsill.

Flipside

Flipside June 1Flipside June 2The June edition of Flipside is now out – and is in fact, flipped, as instead of a front and back cover it has two front covers. You can choose between X-Men or Edge of Tomorrow, depending on your taste! I intend to display both covers on the desk.

This month there are articles on real-life mutations, both naturally occurring and laboratory created (I would quite like some GloFish for the library); the secrets of skin – did you know octopus communicate via their skin; football technology (with a Brazilian emphasis) and the possibility of time travel. There’s loads more as well…

Pick up Flipside from the main library desk and enjoy.

Flipside

flipsies 002The new Flipside is here!

I particularly liked the article on scuba diving, but there’s lots more to find out about, as well as all the usual stuff. Pick it up from the main library desk if you want to find out Pompeii, Ricky Gervais, the science surrounding the film The Quiet Ones or space storms…

Tuesday 4th March – Flipside

flipside 002The March edition of Flipside has hit the library desk – there’s some kind of massive robotic people-carrier on the front cover, which looks just like a transformer to me, but I must be wrong, because apparently it is a Mighty Mech, whatever that is!

I much prefered the back-lit and eerie photographs by ice-climber Thomas Senf. He takes photos of caves and ice falls in Norway using flares and lights to create stunning, otherworldly shots.

Apart from that? There are articles on artificial intelligence, how Dolphins – Spy in the Pod was filmed, Dark Souls II and Need for Speed the movie – and lots more.

Wednesday 29th January – Flipside

imageThe February edition of Flipside is now in (and available on the main library desk) – it has RoboCop on the front cover so it’s hard to miss! The article inside is about the making of the film and the special effects, but also about the real police robots that are being developed to perform some of the more menial police tasks. RoboCop could be real in the future.

I liked the article about how to rock climb by jamming your hands and knuckles into cracks in the rock, although it sounds extremely painful, and is possibly only for the truly dedicated. The one about the top ten deadliest reptiles was fun too, especially because none of them actually live in the UK…

As usual, there are lots more bits and pieces about games, technology, media and general weird stuff.  Enjoy!

Wednesday 4th December – Flipside

imageDid you know that archery is really Physics? I didn’t until I read the cover story in this month’s Flipside, which is all about the archery craze spreading across the world in the wake of the new Hunger Games film, Catching Fire. Apparently in order to be a top-notch archer you need a knowledge of how flight physics works (it’s all about the oscillation) as well as energy transfer ( potential to kinetic) and the ability to align bone structure and muscle correctly.  It all looks so easy when Jennifer Lawrence does it!

Read the full article in Flipside, available from the library desk.

Wednesday 30th October – Flipside

Flipside - lost in spaceNovember’s edition of Flipside is here for those of you who like to read about gadgets and technology. There are some great articles this month including a really interesting one about why facial mapping is helping to make the next generation of games more compulsive by capturing every movement and emotion on the character’s faces.

There are also articles about space; drag cars; making music videos and a whole host of other things. You can pick up Flipside at the library desk.

Tuesday 24th September – Flipside

FlipsideThe latest edition of Flipside is now in, and it is full of football facts which I know some people find really interesting… I don’t, but I did enjoy the article about Tornado Alley – read it and impress your Geography teacher with your knowledge about twisters, storm chasers and monster tornadoes. If that’s not your thing either, there are some particularly gruesome and grisly medical facts, the one about slug glue is truly disgusting. Don’t try it at home.

Flipside is on the main library desk.

Friday 7th June – Flipside

Flipside SharksThis month’s Flipside is a Shark Special – there’s a factual article about sharks and some of the myths about shark attacks; one on sharks in the movies, including special effects and an interview with Andre Hartman, the ‘Shark Whisperer’ where he explains his eight steps to calming down a great white shark… just in case you ever need to!
