Book of the Week – Landline by Rainbow Rowell

LandlineLandline is Rainbow Rowell’s first adult novel, but it has all the fantastic character and story of her young adult books. It is the story of Georgie and Neal, whose marriage is not going well. When Neal leaves with the children, Georgie discovers that she can talk to Neal-in-the-past via an old-style telephone.

What advice would you give the younger you… and would you listen?

As far as time machines go, a magic telephone is pretty useless. TV writer Georgie McCool can’t actually visit the past; all she can do is call it, and hope it picks up. Is she going crazy or is this a chance to make things right with her husband, Neal?

Maybe she can fix the things in their past that seem unfixable in the present. Maybe this stupid phone is giving her a chance to start over… if that’s what she wants.

Book Bucket List

We all have bucket lists of things we want to do in our lives but what about the things we wish we could do? There are so many cool things in the fictional world that I wish I could do and here are the top 5 things on my fictional bucket list:

  1. Spend a year at Hogwarts, obviously
  2. Get a makeover in the Capitol
  3. Meet Mr Tumnus in Narnia
  4. Visit Amsterdam with Augustus Waters
  5. Go to uni with Cath and Wren from Fangirl

Eleanor & Park, by Rainbow Rowell – reviewed by RB

eleanorandparkAnother book that unashamedly made me cry – whilst this in itself is not a major feat, I cannot stress enough how good this book is. It follows two teenagers named Eleanor and Park, falling in love. It’s that simple.

Rowell gets everything right. There aren’t many authors who can boast that. The characters feel real, they get into real situations and act like people do. The narrative switches between the two main characters and we are left with two fully fleshed out people. It’s one of the first books I have read that, when provided with one character’s point of view I felt that I could provide the other’s. I knew both Eleanor and Park.

This story is romantic. It just is! I always get invested in love stories, but Eleanor and Park involved me at a deeper level. The book is manipulative, it echoes what it is like to be a teenager in love. I hurt when they hurt; I was happy when they were happy.

Attachments by Rainbow Rowell, reviewed by EM

attachmentsAttachments by Rainbow Rowell is a very good book.

The blurb says:

“Hi, I’m the guy who reads your e-mail, and also, I love you . . . ”

Beth Fremont and Jennifer Scribner-Snyder know that somebody is monitoring their work e-mail. (Everybody in the newsroom knows. It’s company policy.) But they can’t quite bring themselves to take it seriously. They go on sending each other endless and endlessly hilarious e-mails, discussing every aspect of their personal lives.

Meanwhile, Lincoln O’Neill can’t believe this is his job now- reading other people’s e-mail. When he applied to be “internet security officer,” he pictured himself building firewalls and crushing hackers- not writing up a report every time a sports reporter forwards a dirty joke.

When Lincoln comes across Beth’s and Jennifer’s messages, he knows he should turn them in. But he can’t help being entertained-and captivated-by their stories.

By the time Lincoln realizes he’s falling for Beth, it’s way too late to introduce himself.

What would he say . . . ?

It shows the dangers of modern technology. It captures the fears and worries of people and at the same time creates an interesting and unorthodox, yet great love story. You fall in love with the book just like the characters fall in love with each other. It will give you an injection of happiness because it is so fab!!!!!!!!!!!

Why I didn’t finish Fangirl

Why I gave up on Fangirl, by Rainbow Rowell, even although I love it – an explanation by CM.Fangirl

  • I’ve lost interest
  • But I still love the story and the characters
  • I am too lazy
  • The story got boring
  • There was a lull in the plot
  • It went good – bad – good?
  • I wanted to read Anna Karenina instead

But, you should still read it because it’s a good plot and the characters are vivid and it’s a wonderful story of love and friendship.

Friday 14th March – Fangirl by Rainbow Rowell, reviewed by EM

FangirlFangirl by Rainbow Rowell is a brilliant novel about a small town girl who, with her twin sister Wren, starts college and moves away from home. Wren fits in naturally but Cather struggles to fit in. I was hooked from start to end and I would recommend this to anyone and would love to read Rowell’s other books.

Thursday 13th February – New Books in the Library

New Books FebruaryI love it when a batch of new books arrives just before a holiday weekend – more reading time, and it’s just the kind of weather to curl up in a warm room with a good book. Some of this selection were recommended by students and some were requested.

If you want to be one of the first to read one of the new books, ask me, and I might even be able to have it ready for the long weekend.

Wednesday 5th February – Rainbow Rowell

http://rainbowrowell.com/blog/ This is the author website for Rainbow Rowell, the author of Eleanor and imagePark. She is an author that I have recently discovered and am enjoying very much. She has written Eleanor and Park, Attachments, and Fangirl. I bought Fangirl just recently and I love it already. I have also read Eleanor and Park which I loved, and have reviewed. I am definitely putting Attatchments on my book list for 2014 and I’m very excited for her book Landline, which should be coming out later this year. P.S: Mrs Vennall promised me she would buy Fangirl for the library so you should definitely watch out for it. (You should also definitely follow Rainbow Rowell on tumblr (rainbowrowell.tumblr.com) because she posts stuff about her books also Sherlock.)

Thursday 16th January – Eleanor & Park

Eleanor&ParkEleanor & Park by Rainbow Rowell

You should read this book because it is a wonderful book about a girl called Eleanor who meets a boy called Park. It takes you along on the journey of these two teenagers going from total strangers to best friends, and the troubles they face along the way.

My favourite part was when they first become interested in each other because you knew they would become very close.
