World Book Day books

We have some copies of the World Book Day books in the library. You can find them on the Quick Reads spinner. These are a great way to try out an new author, or to read a different genre.

World Book Day vouchers can be used up until the end of March to get your own copy of any one of the books for free! If you don’t have a World Book Day voucher, ask your English teacher.

Today is World Book Day!!!

Book of the Week – Goth Girl and the Pirate Queen by Chris Riddell

GothGirlPirateQueenThis week’s Book of the Week is one of the World Book Day books (which you can own for free by using your World Book Day token). These little books are perfect for trying out a new author or a series – we keep them on the display spinner in the library.

The Goth Girl books, by Chris Riddell are full of puns and pictures, and Goth Girl and the Pirate Queen is no exception. The blurb says:

Ada Goth is in the fashionable seaside town of Brighton for the World Frock Day Ball, where all the most fashionable people show off their fashionable dresses, but she has lost the money Lord Goth gave her to buy a gown. Ada must come up with a plan or she won’t be able to go to the ball after all. Can the mysterious stranger she meets at the beach save the day?

We have the other Goth Girl books as well – they can often be found on the displays, because they are so pretty!

Short & Sweet

Sometimes you don’t know whether you are going to like an author’s style or not, and it’s good to try out a shorter extract before you commit yourself to reading a whole book by them. The World Book Day books are ideal as ‘tasters’, and if you enjoy them you can always go ahead and read other books by those authors.

We always buy multiple copies of the World Book Day books – and this week they are all on the Book of the Week display stand.

Tuesday 11th March – World Book Day books

WBD2014_orange_right1Want a quick read? Why not pick up one of the 2014 World Book Day books – you can get your own copy free from a book shop using the WBD tokens (we still have a few left, ask at the desk), or you can borrow one of the library copies.

Maureen Johnson’s The Boy in the Smoke is a connecting story in her Shades of London series (The Name of the Star, The Madness Underneath and, coming in September, The Shadow Cabinet) and I think it does a good job of rounding out one of the characters – Stephen Dene – explaining why he can see ghosts and why he becomes the leader of the Shades. The blurb says…

On a cold night, Stephen Dene goes to the Eton boathouse to perform a desperate act. But someone stops him along the way, sending his life in a new and decidely strange direction, leading him to London, to two new friends and to a world of shadows and mystery.

rockwarRobert Muchamore’s The Audition is an introduction to his new series Rock War – Noah really wants to take part in the Rock War auditions but his band has only three members and the minimum number needed to enter is four. When he is asked to make up the numbers in a competing band he is tempted. The blurb…

Two kids, one band, one crucial audition. Noah’s a natural on the guitar, and he’d give anything to get through the Rock War audition. But when he betrays his best friend to join another band, he knows he’s crossed the line. Will he risk their friendship for the sake of musical stardom?

Both these books are on the new book display, just inside the library doors.

BOOKMARK COMPETITION

As part of the celebrations on the recent World Book Day, the English department ran a competition for pupils from S1 to S3 to design a bookmark. There were some fantastic and original entries, and it was very difficult to choose between them. However, the winners have now been chosen and will be announced shortly – and all the bookmark designs have been made into real bookmarks which are available in the library. Pick up a specially designed bookmark next time you borrow a book!
