Book of the Week – Alex, the Dog and the Unopenable Door, by Ross Montgomery

alex the dog and the unopenable door

Alex, the Dog and the Unopenable Door has the kind of title that makes you pick up a book to see what it is about – and this book is definitely a bit quirky! Alex’s father – a famous explorer – has escaped from hospital and disappeared. Alex sets out to find him, and heads into adventure in the Forbidden Lands. I loved the silliness in this book and the unpredictability – it was absolutely impossible to guess what would happen next.

The blurb on the back of the library copy says…

‘Mmm,’ Alex said, ‘You’re male, maybe… A cross-breed. Part terrier. And part… Alsation?’

The dog looked at him. Alex couldn’t shake the feeling that it was eyeing him with suspicion.

Join Alex and his very surprising dog on an epic, silly adventure to discover what lies at the heart of the Forbidden Lands…

Also starring

* Matthew the Headmaster (who looks nothing like a headmaster)

*A girl with unfeasibly sharp teeth

*A nasty bully who gets his comeuppance

Plus!

Other dogs, wolves, baboons, an orchestra for violent children, and much, much more…

Branford Boase Award

bbThe Branford Boase Award is given annually to a children’s book by a new author – and they are obviously very good at picking their winners. Several have gone on to become very well known, and some have won other awards. Previous Banford Boase winners include Siobhan Dowd, Jenny Downham, Mal Peet and Marcus Sedgwick amongst others (you can find the full list on the website – click on the logo).

The 2014 shortlist is…

  • Winter Damage, by Natasha Carthew
  • Infinite Sky, by C. J. Flood
  • Wild Boy, by Rob Lloyd Jones
  • Red Ink, by Julie Mayhew
  • Alex, the Dog and the Unopenable Door, by Ross Montgomery
  • The Poison Boy, by Fletcher Moss
  • Geek Girl, by Holly Smale

Some of these books are already in the library; the rest are on order and will be here shortly. We will be featuring them on the blackboard display and the blog over the next few weeks.
