BLOOD RED ROAD – REVIEW BY VE

It’s quite difficult to write a tale that is as constantly exciting throughout. However, I found this with ‘Blood Red Road’. The story takes place in a post-apocalyptic world and follows the story of Saba. Saba’s brother Lugh is kidnapped by robed riders and she vows to chase them and rescue her brother.

The novel is enthralling. The derelict setting creates a dramatic environment and Young uses it well, the constant threat of the harsh world is ever present. Even in the blandest sections of the novel, there is a sense of excitement and danger. There are many moments in the book where everything seems hopeless, creating a fantastic read.

The characters are all well thought out. One of the most appealing aspects of the book for me is the fact that Saba is attempting to rescue her brother. It seems that every book these days features someone desperately trying to rescue the love of their life. It is a refreshing change to have a character chasing after a relative instead. Also, the characters are all interesting. Ranging from the courageous Saba to the cocky Jack, all of the characters are fascinating and make the book very enjoyable.

BOOK OF THE WEEK – BLOOD RED ROAD

Moira Young has just won the Costa Children’s Book Award for her teen novel Blood Red Road. This is what the judges said about it:

“It’s astonishing how, in her first novel, Moira Young has so successfully bound believable characters into a heart-stopping adventure. She kept us reading, and left us hungry for more. A really special book.”

And from the blurb:

The dustlands beyond remote Silverlake are ruined and lawless. Saba, born and raised there, has hardly ever seen a traveller pass. Until the day black-robed riders arrive in search of her brother. They have been waiting to take him all his life.

Lugh is gone, and with him half of Saba’s soul. She must find her twin, and nothing but death itself will stop her. On her dangerous journey, accompanied by a clever crow, Saba needs courage and a spirit as strong and sharp as her crossbow to survive. Along the road come enemies and allies – and a mysterious young man with eyes the colour of moonlight…
