the lie treeCosta Children’s Award winner…

The leaves were cold and slightly clammy.  There was no mistaking them.  She had seen their likeness painstakingly sketched in her father’s journal.  This was his greatest secret, his treasure and his undoing.  The Tree of Lies.  Now it was hers, and the journey he had never finished stretched out before her.

When Faith’s father is found dead under mysterious circumstances, she is determined to untangle the truth from the lies.  Searching through his belongings for clues she discovers a strange tree.  A tree that feeds off whispered lies and bears fruit that reveals hidden secrets.

Tuesday 28th January – Book of the Week

imageChris Riddell won the 2013 Costa Children’s Book Award with Goth Girl and the Ghost of a Mouse, a sumptuous book about Ada Goth and her unusual house – the illustrations are fantastic and the puns are hilarious. The story is pretty good too!

The blurb on the back says:

Meet Ada Goth. She lives in Ghastly-Gorm Hall with her father, Lord Goth, lots of servants and at least half a dozen ghosts, but she hasn’t got any friends to explore her enormous, creepy house with.

Then, one night, everything changes when Ada meets a ghostly mouse called Ishmael. Together they set out to solve the mystery of the strange happenings at Ghastly-Gorm Hall, and get a lot more than they bargained for….

BOOK OF THE WEEK – BLOOD RED ROAD

Moira Young has just won the Costa Children’s Book Award for her teen novel Blood Red Road. This is what the judges said about it:

“It’s astonishing how, in her first novel, Moira Young has so successfully bound believable characters into a heart-stopping adventure. She kept us reading, and left us hungry for more. A really special book.”

And from the blurb:

The dustlands beyond remote Silverlake are ruined and lawless. Saba, born and raised there, has hardly ever seen a traveller pass. Until the day black-robed riders arrive in search of her brother. They have been waiting to take him all his life.

Lugh is gone, and with him half of Saba’s soul. She must find her twin, and nothing but death itself will stop her. On her dangerous journey, accompanied by a clever crow, Saba needs courage and a spirit as strong and sharp as her crossbow to survive. Along the road come enemies and allies – and a mysterious young man with eyes the colour of moonlight…
